001 [Shinnosuke and Kouta as Buddy Cops]

[ The day is not going to plan. Shinnosuke was supposed to take the rookie under his wing - like he has done with various rookies a hundred times! - and show him the ropes by taking him out on the beat. It was unlikely that anything extreme was going to happen, considering it's a day shift and criminals tend to like the added cover of darkness to obscure their work, but this, this is just...

Shinnosuke sighs, wishing they'd stayed in the patrol car and not parked it a few blocks away. If they had been cruising along in a car this wouldn't have happened. He wouldn't have an elderly woman hanging off his arm and smiling up at him gratefully, thanking him for helping her cross the road. Although it isn't really a chore, and she is very sweet about it... It's just embarrassing; he's nearly twice her size! And she told him he reminded her of her grandson. Of course.

And rather than wait back on the other side of the road the rookie shadowed him the entire time, didn't he. Prolonging the agony. And now he's grinning. ]

You better not be laughing at me.

[Though, the more Shinnosuke peers at Detective Kazuraba the more genuinely and harmlessly happy the smile seems to be. He's just been super perky all day so far.

Shinnosuke needs a coffee. ]

Why would I be?

[Maybe he is a little amused at the sight going on in front of him, but that's small compared to his elation about other things. He was finally out and about and working with a senior detective. The star detective no less.]

[ Shinnosuke just gestures helplessly in front of them both. ]

Walking little old ladies home... It's not the image I want to cultivate.

[ He likes to cultivate that cool, successful image. Solving crimes, looking good. Yep, that's Tomari Shinnosuke. Pure competence. ]

[Kouta makes a thoughtful humming sound as he glances at the old lady they were currently escorting then back at Shinnosuke.]

I dunno, I don't think that'd be a bad image to have.

[Helping people was what detectives did after all, right?]

[ Oh man, he's really, definitely genuine. This kid earnestly believes in helping people. Okay, maybe Shinnosuke is thawing towards him a bit... even if he did come to work in an inappropriately bright and gaudy tie. Shin's mouth quirks up at one side. ]

This what you got into the job for, then?

[His grins widens a little.]

Mmhm! Ah, and I also got it so I could move out of Sis' apartment and start living on my own. She can't look after me forever.

[He couldn't keep being a burden on her forever.]

[shin_niisan]

That's a good aim to have, becoming an independent man.

[ Some older siblings like to take care of their younger ones, but Shinnosuke doesn't know Kazuraba's sister so he can't comment. Especially based on his own feelings - he doesn't even have siblings! ]

Let's carry on around this block and work our way back to the patrol car. We can stop in on some local businesses and check they don't have any news or concerns for us.

[If it's even possible, Kouta's cheer seem to heighten even more.]

[ Shinnosuke can't resist adding- ]

Next time an old lady needs help crossing the street, it's your turn.

[Kouta throws in a small mock salute.]

[ He seems like he means it, too; if another elderly person comes alone needing help Shinnosuke doesn't actually doubt Kazuraba will do it. The job isn't always that safe and simple, though. ]

Let's head for the 7-11 on the corner; I remember a while back they had a problem with gangs of teenagers coming in at night, creating a lot of noise in the neighbourhood and making threats.

I think I heard something about that from my old dance team. Is it just a few or a lot?

[shin_niisan]

Just a few; if it had been a crowd any larger we would've intervened much sooner.

...Do you think any of your old dance team might know who they are?

Maybe. I could ask them the next time I see them.

[shin_niisan]

Would you? That'd be a great help! It's useful to have contacts in unusual places.

[Yay, he's being helpful! Kouta nodded his head.]

Mm! Sure thing.

[Shinnosuke could just about shake Kazuraba's hand right now, but they're walking so that would be awkward. Instead he'll suffice with being grateful verbally.]

[After they eventually finish their impromptu escort of the elderly woman. They had then headed to the shop Shinnosuke had mentioned and when they entered Kouta raised an arm in a friendly wave to the person working the cashier.]
